AMOS 2022 Reflections

AMOS 2022 Reflections

Moriba Jah

October 11, 2022

‍

This year's Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies Conference (AMOS) brought many people together from across the globe to explore and share any and everything about space safety, security, and sustainability.

I felt a tremendous sense of pride from the moment I landed on Maui and saw a Privateer screen at the airport welcoming everyone to the island and conference.

‍

It was always present in my heart, mind, body, and soul that Privateer is a Maui based company that I co-founded just a year ago, nestled at the feet of the great mount Haleakalā.

‍

As I interacted with waves of people I was reminded of my dharma and sacred oath to remind humanity about the interconnectedness amongst all things and recruit their empathy to enroll them in an intergenerational contract of stewardship. Land, ocean, air, and space are linked. Detriment to one affects the others.

‍

‍

‍

‍

There was no better way at AMOS to exemplify our ethos than by releasing the world’s first truly free global access to accurate orbital information and collision risk assessment data through our apps Wayfinder and Crow’s Nest respectively. Knowledge is not ubiquitous across humanity and Privateer believes it should be.

‍

To that end, I participated in a virtual short course and spent time with middle school children at our booth explaining the importance of space environmentalism and sustainability, letting them know our future was in their hands.

‍

The native Hawaiian practice of Kuleana, responsibility, is needed and the Hawaiian kids resonates with this immensely.

‍

I also co-chaired a session on space situational awareness and participated on a panel regarding space sustainability, where I underscored the need for creating a circular space economy to achieve pollution prevention through reuse and recycling of our satellites and rockets.

‍

‍

‍

‍

‍

‍

My daily runs by the ocean reminded me of my dharma: Earth herself needs the voices and actions of many to rescue her from our current path toward a tragedy of the commons and wide-scale environmental demise. I am deeply committed to being one of those voices.
